An apiary is a place where bees and beehives are kept, especially a place where bees are raised for their honey. Honey bees forage for nectar and pollen sources to produce some of the world's finest products.

The beekeepers at Beaver Island Apiaries have learned honey bee behavior to create a mutually acceptable working environment. This includes hive boxes protected from high winds situated on the edge of cedar forests and fields full of Michigan wildflowers. We are located on Beaver Island, in Lake Michigan, 18 miles offshore from the mainland. Our beehives are tucked away on the northeast corner of East Side Drive and Pebble Beach Drive, one mile south of Welke Airport.

The honey bee works 24/7 to produce many raw ingredients found in our Beaver Island Apiaries' products. Look for them in Spring, Summer and Fall.

Look for the Beaver Island Apiaires' truck on the Island (maybe at the Wilke Airport Parking area); feel free to open the back cap window and pay for a jar of honey or other items, or stop at Heidi's Greenhouse on Paid En Og Road and Buff-Ket Road or the Toy Museum in St. James. If you want items not found in the truck, let us know and we can deliver them to you on the Island.

If you are a teacher and would like to learn how the study of the honey bee and the study of beekeeping can help your students meet many of the benchmarks in the Michigan Curriculum Frameworks, go to theMichigan Department of Educationwebsite to see objectives by grade band and subject area. Also Google "Apiary Science in Schools" and click on the website associated with Oakland University.
